Hacking at the old wall

All sorts of materials in there, rotten timbers, nasty sand and cement (should have been lime render, as cement is impermeable and "suffocates" the building, humidity builds up, the timbers decays, and the insects make a feast of it... anyway), some nice hazel (100s of years old ?), wattle and daub and the lot.
This excavation prepares the doorway from our existing bedroom into the new 1st floor
